The Moran Community

Origin & History / উৎপত্তি আৰু ইতিহাস

The Moran people are an indigenous community primarily inhabiting the districts of Upper Assam and parts of Nagaland, India. They are believed to be one of the earliest settlers of the Brahmaputra valley.

Historically, the Morans had their own chieftains and kingdoms before being incorporated into the Ahom empire. They contributed greatly to the Ahom war efforts and administration. The Moran chiefs maintained a semi-autonomous status under the Ahom kings.

After the British annexation of Assam in 1826, the Morans, like many other indigenous communities, were gradually dispossessed of their lands and political power.
